DeHart: Early start for annual United Way fundraiser

Be in the Drive-Thru line up early to help out the United Way. Remember, it's a fundraiser so be especially generous.

Don鈥檛 forget鈥擳hursday morning, Oct. 13 from 6 to 9 a.m., is the Maxine DeHart-United Way, Ramada Hotel Drive-Thru Breakfast at the Ramada Hotel, 2170 Harvey Ave.

Enter from Enterprise Way where the fun begins. You will be greeted by the RCMP and traffic officials and many sponsors in the line-up while you are making your way to the Interior Savings breakfast bags and Tim Hortons coffee. Coca-Cola will be giving out their top brand Dasani water. Bmack and Karly of 99.9 Sun FM will be broadcasting live on the sidewalk along Enterprise Way while 101.5 EZ Rock鈥檚 Andy and TJ will set up at the corner of Perkin鈥檚 Restaurant in the hotel parking lot. This year, Linda Winnick, of Picture Perfect, will donate a grand prize of a framed canvas by Douglas Morgan called 鈥91大黄鸭 at Night鈥 with the framing provided by Picture Perfect. Also in the line-up will be a new sponsor in town Art Evolution with a gallery at The Delta Grand Hotel. They will be giving out beautiful posters which can be framed with a discount from Picture Perfect. Jim McLellan, of Tom Harris Cellular, and long-time friend Bruce Telford will be collecting your donations. Tony Stewart, CEO of Quails鈥 Gate Estate Winery, has been named 2016 Business Leader by the 91大黄鸭 Chamber of Commerce. The award celebrates and recognizes his outstanding contribution to the business community. Stewart has been CEO of the winery since 2005 where he has focused his efforts on the development of Quails鈥 Gate as one of Canada鈥檚 top wine brands and a leader in the Okanagan Culinary scene. Stewart will receive the award on Oct. 13 at the Chamber鈥檚 Annual Business Excellence Awards banquet.

Ward Fitzpatrick is the new branch manager of Scotiabank Orchard Place branch, 101-1835 Dilworth Dr. Andrew McGillivray has moved from the Orchard Place branch to manage the Scotiabank in West 91大黄鸭, located on Dobbin Road.

Rebecca Butt has joined the firm of Kwasnicki Law at 206 -437 Glenmore Rd. Rebecca was previously a lawyer for over 10 years in the UK. Her main areas of practice are personal injury law, criminal law and general litigation. She originally articled at their firm and has now qualified to practice law in B.C. Corie Griffiths, with the regional economic development commission, has a new title and promotion. She is now the director of economic development for the Regional District of Central Okanagan. Since assuming her role she has taken pro-active steps in taking this service to the next level of gaining international service exposure and recognition.  Her team continues to re-invent themselves and find innovative solutions to challenging situations.

Prestige Hotels & Resorts has purchased the Vernon Atrium Hotel and Conference Centre, formerly known as the Best Western Vernon Lodge, including the hotel鈥檚 food and beverage operations. The Vernon Atrium Hotel was the sister property of both the Ramada Hotel & Conference Centre in 91大黄鸭 and the Penticton Lakeside Hotel in Penticton. Prestige Hotels and Resorts have 12 locations in B.C. and an existing property in Vernon.

The 91大黄鸭 Museums Society was awarded a grant though Young Canada Works to support an eight month conservation internship. Jesslyn Jarvis was the successful candidate. She graduated from Wilfrid Laurier鈥檚 archaeology program and Fleming College鈥檚 cultural heritage conservation and management program. Since joining the society, she has preserved and treated various objects of historical significance, including fossils, sports equipment, wine bottles and hunting gear. Speaking of The 91大黄鸭 Museums, they have a new addition to their collection. Museum staff were invited to salvage objects from 91大黄鸭鈥檚 Paramount Theatre prior to its demolition. A film splicer was recovered from one of the projection rooms. Landmark Cinemas also donated eight theatre seats, which will be installed in the museum鈥檚 new permanent galleries.

Okanagan College culinary students are making a significant splash in the world of Florida tomatoes. Would-be chefs at OC captured first, second and third place honours in the 27th annual edition of the contest. Annie Low earned first place with her recipe for a tomato chili jam with fresh tomatoes, roasted peppers and fresh and dried chilies. Second place went to Morris Hsu, who developed a recipe for tomato iced tea with slow roasted tomatoes before they were strained and then infused with mint, fennel leaves and ginger. Third place belonged to Elizabeth Devereaux, who stacked a panko-crusted eggplant slice with tomato jam, mozzarella, a tomato slice, tomato mayonnaise and a fresh basil leaf. The students were encouraged to enter the contest by their instructor chef Mike Barillaro.

Okanagan Spirits Craft Distillery will host the Okanagan Spirits Winetender鈥檚 Mixoff 2016, for an evening of cocktails produced by bartenders competing to become the 2016 Winetender Mixoff Champion. Each cocktail will feature a local wine and Okanagan Spirits. Enjoy live jazz music, cocktails, appetizers and then vote for your favourite cocktail and food item. Throughout the years, owner Valentina Ufimzeff has dressed a lot of ladies and changed many closets. With this success, women have asked her if she would do this in a group setting. Valentina has decided to celebrate the anniversary by presenting a fashion master class called Dress to Impress on Oct. 27,

The Remembrance Day poppy committee is requesting volunteers to man poppy trays during the campaign. The shifts are three or four hours at various locations. If you would like to volunteer call the poppy office at 250-762-2911 to book a time. The poppy campaign is the Legion鈥檚 largest fund raiser of the year and they need your help so that they can continue to serve veterans and the community.

The third annual 2016 Law vs. Accounting Blood Drive takes place from Oct. 15 to Nov. 30. Calling all law and accounting firms, staff as well as their family members and friends to donate blood. Canadian Blood services will track and compare donations made from the legal and accounting communities and will report the results in December.
