Free counselling for Sikh youth around Vernon is being offered this winter.

This Space Belongs to you, a local counselling non-profit, will be providing the support at the Gurdwara Vernon Sikh Temple for Sikhs aged 12-24.

“Following the recent surge in assaults towards Sikh students, we recognize how important it is to improve access to mental health support for Sikh youth in the Okanagan right now,” said executive director Meaghan Duckett.

Sessions will take place on Sunday, Nov. 5 and 19, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. There are additional sessions on Sunday, Dec. 17 and Jan. 21 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.

“Being a Sikh myself I understand the significance and importance our gurdwaras have in the community,” said practicum student Naaz Kaur Grewal-Greeno. “By providing services at the gurdwara we are hoping to create a safe space where Sikh youth feel comfortable accessing services.”
