Give a second life to household items in need of repair

Resurrect the 'too good to toss' mentality鈥攕hift from throw-away to a fix-it society. Repair Caf茅 on April 30.

Do you have a household item in need of repair, don鈥檛 want to toss it out, but you鈥檙e stuck on how to go about fixing it?

A lamp on the fritz? Bicycle in need of repair?  Clothes that need mending? Toaster that just won鈥檛 toast?

If so, the Repair Caf茅 is just the event you鈥檙e looking for.

Hosted by the Regional Waste Reduction Office, the Repair Caf茅 takes place at the Okanagan College campus Centre for Learning Atrium on Saturday April 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

鈥淲ith the help of our talented volunteer fixers, we鈥檙e resurrecting the too good to toss mentality鈥攁 shift from the throw-away to a fix-it society,鈥 said Rae Stewart, with the Regional Waste Reduction Office.

And it鈥檚 all free.

鈥淢ost of our fixers are like-minded hobbyists who enjoy helping others and want to keep items out of the landfill,鈥 Stewart continued.

鈥淭hey鈥檙e all volunteering their time. They vary in age and background, just like those that come with broken items to be fixed.

鈥淭his is our fourth Repair Caf茅 so far, and momentum is really building with each event.鈥

Stewart says the idea is not to come in, drop off your item for fixing, and then come back when it鈥檚 done, but instead to be part of the repair process. 鈥淭he Repair Caf茅 offers the opportunity to learn new skills, plus a chance to connect with skilled people. It鈥檚 a casual environment.鈥
