Helping North Okanagan parents help kids read

Literacy Society workshop offered Jan. 27

Reading is fundamental to a child鈥檚 academic success, not to mention an entryway into all forms of literacy.

This is why the Literacy Society wants to support children and families by offering a workshop during Familly Literacy Week designed just for parents and caregivers of developing readers five to 12 years old.

The workshop will take place on Saturday, Jan. 27 from 12 to 1 p.m. at the Okanagan Regional Library, in the upstairs Okanagan Room.

鈥淲e know that some children will need extra support with their reading, and parents want to help,鈥 says Robyn Thurston, workshop facilitator who also runs the Literacy Society鈥檚 long-standing Reading Together program. 鈥淲e provide some guidelines to help create a positive learning environment in the home.鈥

Parents can sign up by calling the Literacy Society at 250-275-3117 or by emailing coordinator@literacysociety.ca.

Volunteers are also welcomed in the Reading Together program, although assignments may not be ready to go until next fall, now that the program is well into the school year. For about two hours per week, volunteers are assigned to read with children at school who can benefit from the extra support and practice. Training is provided. For more information, email coordinator@literacysociety.ca.
