Students from Osoyoos learned about the importance of keeping their water healthy with practical experience as they joined in a cleanup of the lake.

The Osoyoos Lake Water Quality Society and the primary-school aged children undertook the cleanup of Gyro Beach on Oct. 8.

The annual cleanup began with an educational discussion with the kids on the importance of keeping garbage and toxic substances out of the lake. 

This year OLWQS president Birgit Arnstein shared with students the importance of keeping Osoyoos Lake in pristine condition so that future generations can continue to enjoy all the attributes of the lake that they have experienced.  

Arnstein also explained that students needed to wear protective gloves and be mindful not to pick up sharp objects. 

She also reminded the students of the recently completed Yellow Fish symbols painted beside storm grates in Osoyoos, and the importance of making sure their neighbours do not dump toxic substances  (ie. oil, coolant, paint etc.) in the storm water grates that could eventually kill wildlife such as fish.  

The children then proceeded with the cleanup under the supervision of their teachers.
