PHOTOS: Salmon Arm gets dressed in pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

People encouraged to dedicate a pink ribbon for loved one affected

Friends Abreast, the Salmon Arm dragon boat of breast cancer survivors and supporters, is Dressing the Town Pink.

From Oct. 1 to 15, the downtown will be adorned in pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to remind women to book their mammograms. As in the past, the team handed out pink carnations for a total of 300 at the Saturday Farmers' Market but thanks to a donation from the Salmon Arm Legion, stepped up the campaign this year.

In honour of a loved one affected by breast cancer, people can write a dedication on a pink ribbon available for a minimum donation of $2, with those tributes then tied to the wharf that organizers want to see Dressed in Pink. Those ribbons are available at several downtown businesses, with all proceeds going to the Shuswap Hospital Foundation's current fundraising campaign for wireless breast cancer detection technology equipment.

Friends Abreast also dressed the downtown gazebo and lampposts on Alexander Street in pink to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with the Treble Clef on Lakeshore also illuminated by a pink light at night.
