The march was led by Anas Qartoumeh, a gay Syrian refugee who gave an impactful speech and was met with applause during the event.
鈥淚 want to ask my community in the Middle East 鈥攄o you think I鈥檓 gay? Yes, I am,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 am me now and I will never go back to not being me.鈥

For his first 34 years, Anas Qartoumeh lived a life that wasn鈥檛 his.
鈥淲hen I was young I had a soft voice and the way I walked was different,鈥 he said.
鈥淚 used to be interested in my sisters鈥 toys. My father, he would say he had three daughters (two sisters) and I was the third.鈥
Qartoumeh鈥檚 father not only took note of these 鈥渇eminine traits,鈥 he tried to quash them, so Qartoumeh changed to avoid being a disappointment.
