A Revelstoke dog rescue is wishing everyone a Feliz Navidad as it hosts its second annual online fundraiser.
is a 100 per cent volunteer-run dog rescue that was founded in 2021 by Eliza Kurdziel and JP McCarthy, after the two took a trip to Holbox, Mexico.
According to Kurdziel, the duo visited a local dog shelter, Refugio Animal Holbox, to walk dogs.
鈥淎fter spending the afternoon walking and playing with numerous dogs we walked out of that shelter heartbroken,鈥 said Kurdziel.
But they also left inspired by the shelter鈥檚 group of, 鈥渟elfless volunteers who dedicated their lives to saving these Mexican street dogs.鈥
Now that same selflessness has travelled north all the way to Revelstoke, where Pi帽a Perro's Dog Rescue is run by three primary volunteers and supported by a team of dedicated volunteers and foster homes.
鈥淲e are lucky to have $0 overhead thanks to the kindness of foster homes and the three of us donating our time to find the best forever homes for dogs,鈥 explained Kurdziel. 鈥淥ur adoption fees need to be kept reasonable and competitive, but unfortunately it does not often cover the cost we incur for these dogs. Fundraising is vital to keep rescuing dogs.鈥
In order to continue to provide for the dogs in their care the rescue relies on funds for essential veterinary care, spaying and neutering, as well as foster supplies.
The annual auction fundraiser will help supplement some of the rescue鈥檚 costs as all proceeds will go directly to the animals it helps.
The auction will feature donations from local businesses, including various ski packages, gift cards and hotel vouchers.
鈥淲e are so thankful to the amazing local businesses that showed up for us and our rescue dogs this season. It never ceases to surprise me how our community shows up for each other,鈥 said Kurdziel.
Since its inception three years ago Pi帽a Perro's Dog Rescue has successfully rescued and re-homed approximately 230 dogs, with many of those forever homes in Revelstoke.
鈥淲hile our original mission was to assist Refugio Animal Holbox finding homes for their rescued street dogs, our organization quickly expanded its efforts to include local dogs in Alberta and B.C., mainly from Northern Alberta spay and neuter clinics and First Nations Communities,鈥 said Kurdziel.
Today Pi帽a Perro's Dog Rescue helps both dogs at home and in Mexico, equally.
To bid on the auction and help dogs at the rescue go to , the auction ends Dec. 22 at 11:59 p.m.
