UBC Okanagan students paint the town, again

The new mural is located in 91大黄鸭's Landmark District

Another mural has been added to a building in 91大黄鸭 to help beautify and elevate art in the community.

The fifth mural in the flora and fauna series was unveiled Friday, June 21 in the Landmark District.

The mural celebrates the land and area surrounding 91大黄鸭 and was a collaboration of UBCO鈥檚 visual arts students with instructors David and Jorden Doody. 鈥淭his is part of our acknowledgement and our respect and our appreciation of being here, as uninvited guests on Syilx Territory. So, we wanted to highlight the beauty of this place with our work,鈥 said David.

The mural is an array of Western Tanagers and flower blossoms on the wall of the parkade along 1717 Harvey Avenue, across from where the 91大黄鸭 Farmers Market is hosted on Wednesdays and Saturdays. This new mural is adjacent to the  mural that was painted last summer.

Doody wanted to tie the mural into a theme with the farmers market, which is why the mural crew chose blossoms knowing the project would be unveiled in spring just as the market starts to get bustling.

The crew worked on the mural for four weeks as part of the UBC program.

鈥淎fter this, we are taking a group of students to Spain to do a street art tour, for a month,鈥 said David.

David will have another mural unveiled as part of the Uptown Rutland project, which starts next week.

The UBCO mural program has been running for four years and has seen about 30 murals painted in 91大黄鸭.
