The Elks’ second annual Santa Elks’ Christmas Toy Breakfast Wednesday, Nov. 29, was an overwhelming success. The event was carried out in conjunction with the Salvation Army.
“Volunteers worked hard to promote the event so that the community of Vernon would be aware of what they are trying to accomplish,” said Monica Tracey who, along with Cindy Palazzo of the Elks Lodge, and the Sally Ann, headed up the event.
More than 250 people attended, bringing in more than 280 unwrapped toys for needy children. The toys will be distributed by the Salvation Army to families in need this Christmas.
The fundraiser began at 6:30 a.m. at the Vernon Elks Hall where attendees enjoyed a complimentary pancake and sausage breakfast. Tim Hortons Highway 6 donated all of the coffee, hot chocolate, Timbits and muffins for those on the go.
The hall was full of Christmas cheer with the presence of Santa Claus, Vernon Vipers mascot Sniper, both Vernon radio stations in attendance, and three hours of Christmas entertainment. Performers included the W.L. Seaton Secondary School honour choir, Beairsto Elementary Grade 3 Christmas choir, Tanya Lipscomb, Marv Machura, Karl and Gail Hourigan, and Tracey.
Volunteer photographer Darren McGee snapped many a photo of breakfast goers with Santa.
The Salvation Army’s Kettle was filled with cash by those who wanted to donate money. Toy and money donations will be taken up until Friday, Dec. 15. Please contact the Vernon Elk’s Lodge #45 to donate.
Tracey, Palazzo, and the Salvation Army would like to thank all of the volunteers who gave many hours to make it such a fantastic success.
