A Vernon student's kindness and inclusive community efforts have earned them the Junior Good Citizen of the Year award.
Ash Burdett, 15, was surprised with the award in class at Fulton High School on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
Burdett is involved with the Vernon Arts Centre, Vernon Pride Society and participated in the Transgender Day of Remembrance.
They collaborated with the Family Resource Centre on the binder exchange project, offering tangible support to those navigating their gender identity.
"Ash will be a perfect 2025 Junior Good Citizen for our community," said Kathleen Dubois of the North Okanagan Optimist Club, which helps provide opportunities for youth in the community.
Burdett is also a co-facilitator of a self-care art class and the Awaken Inquiry and Adventure School. Their public speaking skills have been used to communicate their caring and passion for protecting all youth.
Kidston Helm Ross law firm sponsored the Good Citizen of the Year award. Dustin Griffin of the firm presented the plaque to Burdett, who was with her classmates during the surprise.
