For West 91大黄鸭's Atti Torok, his fitness journeys all started with some inspiration from wrestler and actor Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson.
Now Torok, in the middle of the second fitness journey, just completed 366 straight days working out at Anytime Fitness. And, that number continues to grow.
In 2017, while living in Richmond, Torok stood at 294 pounds. One day, while working as a truck driver, Torok got assigned to deliver gym equipment to The Rock, who was filming 'Skyscraper' in Vancouver. After meeting him and seeing the equipment, Torok, 54 at the time, said to himself, "I got to go back."
After nearly a year of working out, including a 100-day challenge, he was down to 206 pounds, losing 88 pounds.
Fast forward to 2020, the world shut down because of the pandemic, closing most businesses, including gyms.
"When COVID hit, I'm not trying to find an excuse cause I could've done a lot of outside activities but I didn't," said Torok. "I kind of rely on the gym and because of them opening and closing all the time, you couldn't get to them."
Later in 2020, Torok got a job opportunity, as a truck driver, in the Central Okanagan and made the move. That September, Torok knew he had gained the weight back and said he "wasn't feeling good." He went to the doctor and was diagnosed with high blood pressure. He had also gained more weight than he had a few years earlier, weighing in at 297 pounds.
"I gained it all back," said Torok.
Determined to make a change in lifestyle, Torok, 60 at the time, joined Anytime Fitness in West 91大黄鸭 on Jan. 1, 2024. He added it was the right gym for him as it's open 24 hours a day so he can go when he can while being a truck driver.
He started with a 100-day challenge and just kept on going. He worked out for 366 days straight and is continuing his streak into 2025.
To celebrate a year straight, he got a shirt made and his wife got a hat made for him that said "366 and counting" on it.
"I'm way healthier now than I was at the beginning of the year," he said. "I wish at that time (back in 2018) I stuck with it, and I regret not sticking with it. Now that I've gone a whole year, I'm sticking with it."
Torok does 30-60 minutes of cardio a day, usually closer to the 60-minute mark (it took him the first six months to get there). His favourite machine is the elliptical but likes to use the treadmill as well. After that, he'll workout with weights for 30-45 minutes, alternating days between upper body and lower body.
As a truck driver, the human body can take a beating from being inactive sitting all day, said Torok. On Aug. 3, 2024, he added a push-up challenge to his routine which he would complete while he was stopped at brake checks. For a few months straight, he hammered out 150 push-ups a day
