The South Okanagan Similkameen Medical Foundation's Winter Wonderland Gala raised over $300,000 to expand the oncology department at the Penticton Regional Hospital.

The holiday spirit of giving visited the Okanagan early with over $300,000 being raised at the South Okanagan Similkameen Medical Foundation's Winter Wonderland Gala on Nov. 23.

The funds will go towards the upgrades and expansion of the oncology department at the Penticton Regional Hospital.

鈥淥ur hearts are full of gratitude for everyone who made this event a success,鈥 said Ian Lindsay, CEO of the SOS Medical Foundation. 鈥淔rom the attendees and sponsors to those who couldn鈥檛 attend but still donated, each contribution brings us closer to our goal of providing critical cancer care right here at home. This gala was a shining example of what we can accomplish when we come together as a community.鈥

In addition to raising funds from donors, the gala recognized the support of one of the foundation's major supporters.

Gerry Turchak, founder of Nor-Mar Truck and Equipment and Brutus Truck Bodies by Nor-Mar Industries Ltd. was presented the first-ever Healthcare Champion Award for his long support of local healthcare.

Over the years, he has contributed over $500,000 to the SOS Medical Foundation, and helped raise almost a million dollars more by matching donations and being the foundation's first Giving Tuesday Champion.

鈥淕erry exemplifies everything this award represents鈥攊ntegrity, compassion, and leadership,鈥 said Lindsay. 鈥淗is unwavering dedication ensures that our community has access to the best possible care.鈥

Although the $300,000 that was raised is a substantial amount, the foundation still has further to go towards the $10 million goal of the oncology department campaign.

The upgrades and expansion will improve access to cancer care for residents of the South Okanagan so they don't have to travel as far to receive the care they need.

The SOS Medical Foundation is inviting the community to keep the giving spirit going through the holidays, and any support, whether a one-time donation or ongoing donations, help improve healthcare for the community.

鈥淲e鈥檝e witnessed incredible kindness and generosity, but there鈥檚 more to do,鈥 said Lindsay. 鈥淭his holiday season, as you reflect on what matters most, consider making a gift that brings hope and healing to families in our region.鈥
