Shuswap stars shine in celebration of dance while raising funds for hospice

Judges and public pick the night's winners

While it was snowing outside, the stars were heating up the dance floor inside the SASCU Recreation Centre on Saturday night.

A celebration of dance and a fundraiser for the Shuswap Hospice Society, this year's Dancing with the Shuswap Stars was a sellout, with audience members rooting for their favourite star dancers when not out on the dance floor themselves.

As far as the fundraising went, all of the competing stars were winners. However, the competition saw the night's judges, and members of the public, pick their winners.

Voting through the purchase of stars, the public's winners in the Amateur Couples category were Chris and Chrisi Davis, while the Judges Choice award went to Kate Boutilier and Peter Chalick.

In the hotly contested Amateur Singles category, the public voted for Darlynne McKenna, who beat out Brandi McAllister, the Judges Choice award winner, by less than a half-dozen votes.

The night also featured several dance demonstrations, including one from the waltz performance group, who took to the floor in formal attire, and young dancers with the Shuswap Dance Center who danced to the song As The World Caves In by Matt Maltese. City Dance's Tango Femme Amoré dance group heel stepped onto the floor to give the audience a taste of traditional Latin dance, while students of Vernon's Aviemore School of Highland Dancing, including Salmon Arm's Brynn Gowan, twirled in a traditional Scottish number, albeit short a few dancers who were unable to get to the event due to the snow.
