Vernon musician ready to rock return of popular TV program

Nearly two decades ago, Manfred Harter鈥檚 popular Shaw Okanagan TV program was taken off the air

A look of disbelief flashes across his face as he sits in the studio, retelling of the moment his show was greenlighted to return to the screen.

Nearly two decades ago, Manfred Harter鈥檚 popular Shaw Okanagan TV program was taken off the air. But after a summer of elbow grease and planning, Manfred鈥檚 Guitar is making its return to channel 11 Monday, Nov. 6.

鈥淚 can鈥檛 believe it actually happened. It seemed like a dream that just kept going,鈥 Harter said as he watched the pilot episode on YouTube. 鈥淚t鈥檚 absolutely insane.鈥

Recorded in Gallery Vertigo, the 28-minute program kicks off with an enthusiastic Harter rocking his tune Canada From Coast to Coast before introducing the first of the night鈥檚 local guest musicians, Cadillac Bob.

鈥淚t鈥檚 really about getting information about guitar players in the area, and it works,鈥 Harter said. 鈥淚 want to focus on other musicians too, but everyone鈥檚 got a guitar.鈥

Following Harter鈥檚 classic formula of interviews and interludes, Manfred鈥檚 Guitar also features Dan Thorsen, Tristan Charbonneau (Soulstice Creation) and April Sheehan.

鈥淒an wasn鈥檛 scheduled in the beginning, but then I found out about him two weeks before the show. I think he was influenced by Jeff Healey,鈥 Harter said, adding that once he heard Thorsen play, he had to add him to the lineup.

鈥淭he show is very organic. It鈥檚 very honest. I try to throw in a little bit of everything,鈥 Harter said, noting the variance in musical styles from performer to performer. 鈥淚t鈥檚 very personable.鈥

Also in the vein of the original 鈥90s show, Harter insists that guests teach him a new dittie.

鈥淚鈥檓 a lifelong learner,鈥 Harter said.

But for Harter, the show鈥檚 creator, access producer and host, it鈥檚 all about the performers.

鈥淭hese people are going to be seen all over the province because of this. Everyone who has Shaw can see these people,鈥 Harter said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 all I care about.鈥

The Okanagan is home to immense musical talent, Harter said, but the people here don鈥檛 have the same opportunities to make themselves known as performers in Vancouver have.

鈥淧romoting Vernon. That鈥檚 me. That鈥檚 where my brain is,鈥 Harter said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 all for them. I get my jollies, but it doesn鈥檛 matter.鈥

It鈥檚 a show that Harter is excited to bring back from its 1993-1998 run.

鈥淚t鈥檚 very funny. There鈥檚 a lot of revivals of old stuff because it鈥檚 better than what鈥檚 out now,鈥 Harter said.

鈥淲hat鈥檚 the difference between classical music and popular music? It鈥檚 time.鈥

During the show鈥檚 downtime, Harter had as a concert at Gallery Vertigo. The offline series reached , but in the back of his mind, Harter knew he wanted to bring it back to the screen.

He went to Shaw TV, and the rest is history.

鈥淭hey bent over backwards for me,鈥 Harter said, adding how grateful he has been for their help in reigniting the show.

The next episode is slated to drop in January. The pilot episode is available in full on YouTube.
