RONA stores in the Okanagan and throughout B.C. raised more than $500,000 for non-profit organizations in its month-long Home Sweet Home campaign.

Three Okanagan organizations are receiving some sweet support.

The RONA Foundation will donate more than $5,000 to the area non-profit organizations (NPOs) from its Home Sweet Home campaign, which ran from Sept. 1 to Oct. 7.

Through the involvement of its employees and the generosity of its customers, the company raised over $515,000, which will be used towards revitalizing living environments or improving access to housing for victims of domestic violence and their children, low-income families, and people with disabilities or mental health issues. From this amount, more than $8,000 will go to four NPOs in the Thompson-Okanagan area.

91´ó»ÆѼ's Habitat for Humanity Okanagan Society will receive $3,689.19; South Okanagan Women In Need Society from Penticton will collect $1,698; and Vernon's Sleep In Heavenly Peace – an organization that builds beds for youth who are sleeping on floors and couches – gets $1,039.

The Kamloops and District Elizabeth Fry Society, which provides services to people who are, or could be, criminalized, with an emphasis on the needs of women and youth, will receive $1,365.

Donations were collected at in-store checkouts and during online purchases on the  website.

"Our troops were particularly motivated this year!, said RONA Foundation board of directors president and senior vice-president of marketing and customer experience, Catherine Laporte.

"Our in-store and distribution centre teams were particularly moved by the current housing crisis and were even more committed because each team had the opportunity to choose the local organization they supported. I would like to thank everyone who contributed so generously to this very dear cause."

The campaign will support 150 Canadian non-profits that help victims of domestic violence and their children, low-income families, and people with disabilities or mental health issues.

“Every person should have a safe place to live," said JoséeLafitte, RONA Foundation director. "That’s something I believe in strongly, especially given the issue of access to housing that affects so many Canadians today."
