The Armstrong Wetland Association (AWA) began preliminary work this week on their expansive pond enhancement project.

Under the supervision of Hill Environmental, AWA members braved a wet and soggy Wednesday morning to install amphibian fencing.

The project bordered on the north by Meighan Creek and on the west by Okanagan is city owned land. After getting their permission to pursue the project and receiving all the necessary government permits, the AWA has finally been able to begin.

The permits were needed as the proposal included digging a pond, a hummock boardwalk and observation platform. The pond and hummock (planted with native trees and bushes) will enhance the diversity of the environment while the boardwalk and platform will allow the public to enjoy it.

The black plastic amphibian fencing installed surrounds the work area. This area will be monitored for the next week or two so that any amphibians attempting to hibernate will be removed to a safe place outside the work zone. As soon as the ground freezes, an excavator will dig out the pond and build the hummock.

The hummock will be covered with grass seed and overlaid with straw to suppress invasive weeds. In spring, with the help of volunteers, native trees and bushes will be planted and the boardwalk, viewing platform and signage will be built.

The end result will be a safe haven for an amazing variety of Insects, birds and amphibians and a wonderful place for everyone to enjoy and appreciate.
