UBCO artistic creativity on display

Creative students and faculty members to host annual Spring Festival.

As the academic year winds to a close, UBC Okanagan students  are completing final projects, experiments and prepping for exams.

While the engineers have been busy building things, students in the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies have been painting, drawing, writing, sculpting, acting, and getting set for the annual Spring Festival.

The Spring Festival, presented by the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies, brings a myriad of events to campus, and several take place throughout the city of 91大黄鸭. Most events are free and open to the public. Pay parking is available on campus. Below is a rundown of the various festival events:

What: Public Art Projects

Where: UBC Okanagan outdoor spaces

When: Now until Sunday, April 17

Students in VISA 245 (Visual Arts Sculpture class) will be showing sculptural works in a public context. Working with steel and other materials, the students have created works that respond to the characteristics of the UBC Okanagan campus. Come and walk around campus and enjoy the many pieces of art strategically located.

What: Book Launch 鈥╢or Desecrations by Matt Rader, Paper Shell, and CRWR 381 (Writing of Poetry) Chapbooks

Where: Streaming Caf茅, 596 Leon Ave, 91大黄鸭

When: Thursday, April 7, from 7 to 9 p.m.

The class is launching a new book of poems, the latest Paper Shell anthology of student writing, plus chapbooks from the upper level poetry workshop.

What: Draw By Night #15: Lost Things

Where: Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art, 421 Cawston Ave, 91大黄鸭

When: Thursday, April 7, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Inspired by the exhibit 鈥淵ORK鈥, this theme explores lost things of all kinds. Throughout the evening we will draw 鈥淟OST鈥 and 鈥淢ISSING鈥 posters for our misplaced artifacts in a night of networking and drawing. Come armed with your favourite drawing utensil, some supplies will be on hand.

What: Pony! Cabare

t鈥╓here: Black Box Theatre, 1375 Water St, 91大黄鸭

When: Saturday, April 9, doors open at 7 p.m., cabaret at 8 p.m., dance 9:30 p.m. to midnight

The first ever Pony Cabaret, an evening of the Okanagan鈥檚 underbelly. Singing, dancing, burlesque, and stand up comedy. Cabaret hosted by Michael V. Smith is followed by a dance party. All proceeds go to the Living Positive Resource Centre and UBC Okanagan鈥檚 theatre students.

Tickets at door: $10 (for cabaret and dance), $7 (dance only)

What: BFA Graduation Exhibition Opening Reception: Stranger In Your Pocket

Where: UBC鈥檚 Creative and Critical Studies Building, 1148 Research Road

When: Saturday, April 16, from 6 to 10 p.m.

The exhibition showcases the work of 15 fourth-year visual arts students and 9 fourth-year interdisciplinary performance students.

What: Student Okanagan Film Festival

Where: Landmark Cinemas Grand 10, 110-948 McCurdy Road East, 91大黄鸭

When: Thursday, May 5, at 7 p.m.

This is the inaugural Student Okanagan Film Festival (SOFF) and begins a tradition of celebrating emerging student filmmakers of the Okanagan Valley. The event will showcase short films from a wide range of genres including mini-documentary, experimental, music videos, animation, short narrative and much more.

Admission is by donation.
