Central Okanagan students were up to the challenge on Saturday, as they competed in the annual First LEGO League 鈥楳asterpiece鈥 regional qualifying tournament.

On Feb. 10 at UBCO鈥檚 Engineering, Education, and Management Building, 13 teams totalling around 75 kids aged 9 to 16 from 91大黄鸭, Lake Country, and Vernon competed in the event.

鈥淓vents like this inspire wonder in our learners, making them curious about technology鈥檚 role in solving real-world problems and able to see their own potential to create change,鈥 said Central Okanagan superintendent and CEO Kevin Kaardal. 鈥淲e are grateful to our staff and the UBCO students for creating this opportunity.鈥

For this year鈥檚 challenge, students had to research, explore, and create innovative prototype situations for real-world problems in the world of art, technology, and hobbies. Additionally, teams were to build a robot that was to complete missions in a timely fashion while also finding a way to improve the audience鈥檚 experience watching their creation.

鈥淯BCO is always happy to host events such as this. Our campus is a place of innovation, creativity, and critical thinking,鈥 said UBCO associate vice-president of students Dale Mullings. 鈥淚t鈥檚 great to have students from Central Okanagan Public Schools on campus, interacting with our student and faculty volunteers while they try new, imaginative projects. The possibilities are endless, and we wish each one of the students the best of luck in the competition.鈥

The masterpiece challenge is an event students take part in all around the world, in more than 80 countries.
