The City of 91大黄鸭 is inviting design proposals for a new signature sign to be installed downtown.
The project aims to create an iconic gathering spot that represents the community and enhances the city鈥檚 waterfront.
鈥淚t will serve as a high-profile landmark to provide an opportunity for gathering, meeting, and sharing special moments,鈥 according to the bid documents. The sign is intended to go beyond simple 鈥91大黄鸭鈥 letters by incorporating symbolic and artistic features that reflect the city鈥檚 identity.
The project has a delivery budget of $500,000 covering design, fabrication, installation, permits, and other associated costs. The location is a green space between Stuart Park and the 91大黄鸭 Yacht Club. The city says it envisions the sign as a space for creating memories, and its prominent placement is also expected to deter security issues and vandalism.
The design competition will occur in two stages. In the first stage, open to all professional designers, applicants must demonstrate innovation and experience with similar projects. Up to five top submissions will advance to the second stage, where detailed design concepts will be requested. Each shortlisted team will be eligible for a $5,000 honorarium for their work if their proposal is not selected.
The top evaluated detailed design will be invited to enter into a contract with the city for the project. If unsuccessful in reaching terms, the city may invite the next highest evaluated, and so on, until a contract is achieved or the opportunity is cancelled. The sign is scheduled to be completed and in place by winter/spring 2026.
In September, city council approved the design of the North End Monument. It will be placed along Highway 97 between Eillison Lake and Old Vernon Road. Construction is expected to begin sometime in 2025.
