Teary eyed friends and loved ones of Brianna Jankauskas filled a 91大黄鸭 courtroom with teary eyes for a preliminary inquiry trial date on Jan. 13.
91大黄鸭 RCMP were called to a home on Hardie Road on the night of August 21, 2023. Upon arrival, RCMP found a woman with life-threatening injuries.
The individual, who has since been identified as Jankauskas, died shortly after.
Police have called the incident an act of "intimate partner violence," as Jankauskas and the accused, Brandon Joseph Davina had been dating.
Davina was arrested shortly after the incident and was initially charged with manslaughter. However, the charges have since been upgraded to second-degree murder.
Charges of second-degree murder are brought forward by Crown in cases where there is evidence to suggest that the death was intentional but not pre-meditated.
Davina appeared at the preliminary inquiry in person and sat in the prisoner's dock, wearing a red jumpsuit. He has not yet entered a plea.
A preliminary inquiry is typically held before serious criminal cases begin to ensure Crown has gathered sufficient evidence to proceed with a trial. All information and testimony told to the court during the preliminary inquiry is barred from publication under a court-ordered ban.
Jankauskas' friends have previously expressed frustration with the judicial system as unbeknownst to them, Davina had been facing criminal charges of assault and assault with a weapon for an incident of intimate partner violence involving a different woman, while dating Jankauskas.
they were not aware that Davina had a history of accusations of violence and questioned why someone who is alleged to be a risk to women was allowed to use dating apps.
While in custody on charges of second degree murder for the death of Jankauskas, Davina entered a guilty plea and was sentenced for the assault of another woman.
A continuation for the inquiry is scheduled for Jan. 14.
