Contracts have been awarded to Stantec Architecture Ltd. and Bird Construction Group to build a new four-storey care home on the grounds of the current Cottonwoods site at 2255 Ethel Street. The new building will have 234 beds and 80 beds from the current building will continue to operate.
"This new care home will benefit central Okanagan seniors by using a person-centred model of care, in a home-like setting,鈥 said Susan Brown, president and CEO of Interior Health. 鈥淒elivered by well-trained, compassionate and caring nursing and support services staff, people will see the new and expanded site incorporate best practices for infection prevention, privacy and cultural sensitivity.鈥
The first phase of the redevelopment is the construction of the new building, which is expected to begin in the fall and be completed by summer 2027. Phase two will see one of the existing buildings demolished and the construction of a new adult day service and childcare space for 37 kids. The second phase is anticipated to be complete by spring 2029.
Units in the new building will offer single-bed rooms with social and recreational spaces found in a more home-like environment, such as a living room, dining room and outdoor space. Community spaces and services like a hair salon and sacred space will also be part of the build.
