Local youth ballerinas of all backgrounds and skill levels have a chance to train under a nationally celebrated dancer, who's visiting 91大黄鸭 in a talent search this Sunday afternoon, Jan. 12.
Until March, Chan Hon Goh, an Order of Canada recipient with more than 20 years of performance ballet experience, is running auditions across the country in pursuit of a fresh roster of dancers for the Canadian Masterclass Series.
On Sunday, Goh will hold her next audition from 1:15 to 2:45 p.m. at 91大黄鸭's Canadian School of Ballet. The event is advertised as an arabesque-style ballet and is followed by a Q-and-A with Goh until 3:15 p.m.
Her long portfolio in Canada's ballet scene includes lead roles in Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty, the National Ballet of Canada's first principal dancer of Chinese background, the first Canadian awarded by the Royal Academy of Dance's Genee International Ballet Competition, and her own line of pointe shoes and dance slippers.
With this masterclass program running since 2014, in partnership between RBC and Goh's family's namesake Goh Ballet Academy, a priority this season is selecting a diverse community of up-and-coming dancers, according to a statement from the academy.
"What sets this masterclass series apart is its dedication to nurturing aspiring dancers to work alongside seasoned professionals," Goh said in the statement. "My vision extends beyond just teaching dance steps鈥搃t's about guiding the next generation to grow as artists and dance leaders."
Accompanying dancers helping run the masterclass have joined from Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Goh's home of Vancouver, with ballet training around the world in Australia, China and Italy.
Those interested in auditioning for the masterclass can for about $50, though completion of the RAD Intermediate Foundation or an equivalent ballet exam is required. Successful candidates are eligible for financial aid from a $10,000 scholarship fund. For more information, visit .
"[Goh's] leadership in the dance community continues to break barriers and pave the way for future artists,鈥 said Martin Thibodeau, RBC's regional president for B.C., in the statement.
