UPDATE: 11:23 a.m.
When crews arrived on scene they discovered a heater in the basement with smoke and some sparks coming from it.
According to Deputy Fire Chief Brent Penner, the smoke was confined to the heater and did not spread.
鈥淚t was very lucky that only the heater was damaged, the reason being that the property owner was just on their way out the door when the smoke alarm went off in the basement. They went to investigate and by that time they could tell something was going on and was getting worse,鈥 said Penner.
The resident evacuated the home and called 911.
Penner said the resident had planned to leave the heater on when they were out, but luckily the incident unfolded before they left.
The deputy fire chief added that this incident serves as a reminder this time of year to use LED lights, especially on real Christmas trees, as the older lights get hot quickly and cause problems.
鈥淢ake sure to turn off your tree lights before you go to bed. And, sleep with your doors closed, because if something bad happens in your home it creates a nice survivable space.鈥
