It鈥檚 a happy New Year for the RINK Hockey Academy鈥檚 under-17 prep red team.

The team went 5-0 on their way to winning the Pat Quinn Classic in Burnaby between Christmas and New Year鈥檚.

RINK opened the tournament with a 3-2 win against the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA) U17 prep team and an 11-0 win against the Sno-king junior Thunderbirds U16 AA on Thursday, Dec. 28. The 11-0 win featured a six-point game from Brayden Westman (three goals, three assists).

The next day, they finished the round-robin with a 2-0 win against the Wenatchee Wild U16AAA varsity team.

Despite buzzing through the round robin portion of the tournament, the semi-finals the next day posed a harder task as they took on PCHA once again. Tied 3-3 going into overtime, Nate MacPhee scored the winner to help RINK advance to the finals of the tournament.

In the championship game on New Year鈥檚 Eve, RINK got off to a hot start against California Wave HC 16AA as Westman scored a shorthanded goal 61 seconds into the game to make it 1-0. However, RINK found themselves trailing 2-1 after the first period.

The start of the second period was Groundhog鈥檚 Day as Westman scored his second goal of the game, also shorthanded, 61 seconds into the frame to tie the game 2-2. Additionally, both of Westman鈥檚 goals were shorthanded because of penalties from teammate Luke Silvernagle.

California scored in the second period and took a 3-2 lead into the third. In the third period, Jacksen Suttie found the back of the net with 5:24 left in the game to tie the game 3-3.

The game went to overtime where with just 1:30 left to go in the extra frame, Silvernagle was the hero as he scored the tournament-winning goal for RINK.

Westman finished the tournament with 12 points in five games (seven goals, five assists) while Silvernagle finished with five (three goals, two assists).
