Westbound commercial vehicle traffic is now being held in Golden following a five-vehicle collision on Highway 1 west of Revelstoke.
Drive BC reports commercial vehicle storage in Revelstoke has reached maximum capacity as the highway remains closed for vehicle recovery related to the collision.
It is estimated the highway won鈥檛 reopen until at least 3 p.m.
Revelstoke RCMP say the collision occurred sometime before 1 a.m. on Tuesday, March 7, when police, firefighters and BC Ambulance Service crews responded to the five-vehicle collision approximately one kilometre west of Revelstoke on Highway 1.
Revelstoke Staff Sgt. Kurt Grabinsky reports officers with the Trans-Canada East Traffic Services and their collision analyst were at the collision scene for eight hours investigating its cause.
鈥淧reliminary indications are that a westbound tractor trailer unit, driven by a 50-year-old female, collided with an eastbound tractor-trailer unit driven by a 60-year-old male,鈥 said Grabinsky. 鈥淪ubsequently, two additional tractor-trailer units and a passenger vehicle crashed, creating a five vehicle pile-up.鈥
Grabinsky said three people received non-life threatening injuries in the crash, and were transported to hospital in Revelstoke. He said the highway, at the time of the crash, was in winter driving condition, with icy sections topped with light snow.
鈥淎s a result of the various collisions, there is scattered debris on the highway,鈥 said Grabinsky. 鈥淭he materials were all determined to be dry goods and there is no suspected harm to the public or the environment.鈥
