A man now faces potential charges after colliding with a pedestrian crossing light standard Wednesday evening in Rutland.

The 91´ó»ÆѼ RCMP Municipal Traffic Section responded Oct. 5 at 9:37 p.m., to a report of a single vehicle collision at the intersection of McCurdy Road and Hollywood Road North. Police have determined that a northbound grey Volkswagen Golf, had left the roadway and collided with a pedestrian crossing light standard, while making a left turn onto McCurdy Road from Hollywood Road North.

When an officer arrived on the scene, witnesses immediately directed the officer's attention to the vehicles driver who had allegedly began to walk away from the crash scene on foot.

“During the officer’s interaction with the driver of the Volkswagen at the collision scene, they detected what they believed to be obvious signs and symptoms of alcohol intoxication," said Const. Jesse O’Donaghey, in a press release.

"As a result a demand was made of the driver who was subsequently taken to the 91´ó»ÆѼ RCMP Detachment for testing where he provided breath samples in excess of more than 2 times the legal limit."

The driver, a 20-year-old 91´ó»ÆѼ man, faces potential criminal impaired driving charges. He was later released from custody, issued driving prohibitions under the Motor Vehicle Act and will be appearing in Court on Jan. 5.

If you witnessed this crash and have not yet spoken to police you are asked to contact Cst. Troy Bevan of the 91´ó»ÆѼ RCMP Municipal Traffic Section at 250-980-5353.
