A Sicamous woman was killed in a single-vehicle collision early Sunday.

At 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 25, RCMP responded to a report about the collision that occurred east of Sicamous along Highway 1 near Enquist Road.

Sgt. Murray McNeil said witnesses described seeing a westbound sedan driving at a high rate of speed. While attempting to navigate a curve in the road, the vehicle collided with concrete barriers along the westbound shoulder of the highway.

The vehicle then crossed both lanes and came to rest in what McNeil described as a 鈥渄eep slough of frozen water in the eastbound ditch.鈥

鈥淭he vehicle was immersed in deep water after it broke through the ice, leaving only the tires visible on the surface,鈥 said McNeil in a media release. 鈥淭he victim, a 51-year-old Sicamous woman, was removed from the scene with the assistance of Eagle Valley Rescue.鈥

McNeil said speed is believed to have been a contributing factor in the collision, noting there was no precipitation at the time, visibility was good and the temperature was three degrees above freezing.
