The South Okanagan Women in Need Society raised more than $50,000 in its recent Walk to End Abuse.

The sixth annual walk, presented by Parkers Chrysler Dodge Jeep, was held June 1 at Rotary Park in Penticton, with more than 100 participants and spectators.

鈥淏ecause of you, we were able to help more women, youth and children understand and overcome the impacts of abuse,鈥� a statement from SOWINS read.

The event featured the iconic flag installation representing the number of clients that accessed services in the past year, including 8,443 bed stays for women and children, 1,580 crisis calls answered, and unfortunately 1,534 women and children that could not be sheltered.

鈥淎lthough we live in a small community the number of individuals accessing our services and programs, continues to grow year after year. That is why the message sent by all the donors and walk attendees is so powerful. We are letting all those affected by violence and abuse know that we stand with them, and we are walking for awareness and for change,鈥� said Veronica Mora, executive assistant.

Boston Pizza in Penticton, owned by the George Family, hosted the Walk Launch and donated drinks and appies for all attendees. The event raised $14,800; many thanks to Boston Pizza, and the George family.

The team from Hidden Chapel Winery won the prize for the team who raised the most money. This is the third year the winery has won this distinction. Grant Thornton had the greatest number of team members at the event. Amber Getchell of BMO Penticton was the individual who raised the most money in the event.

The seventh annual Walk to End Abuse will take place on June 7, 2020.
