Pauline Terbasket and Mariel Belanger will be the featured speakers at the next UBC Okanagan AlterKnowledge Discussion Series鈥� event planned fo Friday, Nov. 18, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
The series event will be hosted by the Ki-Low-Na Friendship Society, 442 Leon Ave., in downtown 91大黄鸭.
What is the colonial history of settlement in B.C., and why is it important to present-day relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples? That will the focal question addressed at the AlterKnowledge forum鈥攖he invasion and settlement of this province and fostering a rethinking of our relationships through this history.
The discussion will be initiated by Terbasket, the Okanagan Nation Alliance executive director, and Belanger, a masters of fine arts student at UBC Okanagan鈥攂oth members of the Syilx (Okanagan) Nation.
Taking direction from historic accords and documents such as the Memorial to Sir Wilfrid Laurier (co-authored in 1910 by the Chiefs of the Syilx, Secwepemc, and Nlaka'pamux nations), this discussion seeks to explore the contemporary responsibilities of all citizens to the goal of just co-existence.
The AlterKnowledge Discussion series is organized by UBC Okanagan professors Allison Hargreaves and David Jefferess.
The series aims to foster community-engaged knowledge-making, bringing people together to discuss, share and (un)learn, as a practice of decolonization. This event is free and open to the public.
