A house fire in 91大黄鸭's Black Mountain neighbourhood left the inhabitants facing a frigid start to the new year.

Police and 91大黄鸭 firefighters responded to the fire shortly after 8 p.m. Monday at  2151 Verde Vista Rd. on the south side of Highway 33.

The KFD had to deal with sub-zero temperatures in battling the blaze, as smoke was billowing up into the sky from the older bungalow style home.

A fire department spokesman said the residents inside the house were able to escape safely but there was no immediate estimate on the damage yet on the house.

Along with emergency responders, a FortisBC crew was also called in to turn off the power to the residence.

The fire department is expected to release more details on the fire early Tuesday morning.
