From Paul Kariya to Duncan Keith, the stars who helped define a Penticton hockey era will be honoured this weekend at the South Okanagan Events Centre (SOEC).

The 14-year history of the Penticton Panthers will be remembered at Vees' games on Jan. 10 and 11, as the team hosts Panthers Retro Weekend.

鈥淲e鈥檙e excited to celebrate an era that so many fans have fond memories of,鈥 said Fraser Rodgers, the Vees' president of business. 鈥淲e hope to see a generation that as young kids watched the Panthers at Memorial Arena now bring their families to the SOEC this weekend."

Before returning to its iconic Vees brand, Penticton's BCHL team was called the Panthers from 1990 to 2004. Along with Kariya and Keith, notable alumni include former NHL forwards Brendan Morrison, Chuck Kobasew and Tanner Glass.

Current Washington Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery and Rob Tallas, goaltending coach for defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers, also suited up for Penticton during the era.

Retro-themed festivities will proceed at the SOEC when the Vees host the Salmon Arm Silverbacks and Cranbrook Bucks in succession on Friday and Saturday.

Around 25 Panthers alumni 鈥 including Keith 鈥 will be in attendance for this weekend's event. The former Panther played in Penticton from 1999 to 2001 and went on to capture Stanley Cup rings with the Chicago Blackhawks.

As a 1990s soundtrack plays through the SOEC speakers, the Vees will also be wearing red Panthers-inspired jerseys on the ice.

Adult tickets for both Vees' games this weekend will be offered at a discounted, $9 price.

Penticton's throwback jerseys 鈥 to be worn on Jan. 10 and 11 鈥 are now being auctioned online. Bidding closes on Friday, Jan. 10, at noon.

"Winning bids for the jersey auction will have the chance to get their game-worn jersey from the players immediately following the game on Jan. 11," the Vees said in a press release.

Fans can access the auction at

Ahead of the retro-themed hockey weekend, Mayor Julius Bloomfield officially declared Jan. 11 as "Panthers Pride Day" in the City of Penticton.

Bloomfield was joined by Coun. Isaac Gilbert and Vees president Fred Harbinson during the announcement at Memorial Arena on Monday, Jan. 6.

While puck drop for Friday's game at the SOEC is at 7 p.m., action on Saturday will begin at 6 p.m.
