Three 91大黄鸭 Rockets goals were sandwiched between the Seattle Thunderbirds four goals in a 4-3 overtime loss on Friday night (Jan. 17).
Seattle got out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of powerplay goals, coming at the 5:21 mark of the first period and the 11:22 mark of the second.
The Rockets finally got on the board late in the second frame when Michael Cicek potted his 14th goal of the season, assisted by Dawson Gerwing.
In the third period, 91大黄鸭 tied the game at the 4:22 mark when Levi Benson found the back of the net for the third time this season to knot the game. Will Sharpe and Kayden Longley collected the assists.
And with under six minutes to go in regulation, Sharpe scored his second goal as a Rocket, fifth of the season, to give 91大黄鸭 their first lead of the night. Gerwing and Cicek assisted the marker.
But just a couple minutes later, Thunderbirds Nathan Pilling put the puck home to tie the game and force overtime.
Just 2:05 into the extra frame, Seattle's Brayden Schuurman scored his sixth of the season past Jake Pilon to give Seattle the 4-3 win.
Pilon made 31 saves in the loss for the Rockets, who are now 15-20-3-1 on the season, holding the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
鈥淲e talk about it a lot that the third period needs to be our best period,鈥 said Rockets interim head coach Derrick Martin after the game. 鈥淚鈥檇 like to see our first period get a little bit better but I鈥檓 proud of the group鈥檚 effort in the third. We鈥檝e got to be a group that buttons things down when we鈥檝e got that lead but it鈥檚 not all doom and gloom tonight.鈥
91大黄鸭 and Seattle will match up again on Saturday night down in Kent, WA. Puck drop is at 6:05 p.m.
