Snowfall doesn鈥檛 stop Vernon Winter Carnival runners

Starting Block event sees more than 150 people turn out

Over 150 runners took to the snowy streets in Lavington for the Starting Block Winter Carnival 10k/3k hosted by the Kal Rats Sunday, Feb. 11.

While Mother Nature reminded us it is still winter and the snowy conditions did prevent some runners from getting to the start line, the event was all smiles.

Participants鈥 age ranged from under 10 to over 80.

Despite the conditions, times were still speedy as the first male runner Owen Lloyd representing UBCO crossed the line in 35:45 with the first female Emma Kearns also representing UBCO finishing in 41:13.

In addition to the 10k, a fun 3k event was also held with chocolate shoes as prizes and lots of family fun.

This was the 20th running of the event which previously had been known as the Valhalla Pure 10k, held in Vernon at Fulton School.

鈥淕reat events happen when great people show up,鈥 said race director Mel Spooner. 鈥淰olunteers and Community Support (over 40 local businesses donated items and food) make this event a success.鈥

Traditionally, the run takes place the final Sunday of Vernon Winter Carnival so the tentative date for next year will be Feb. 9.

In addition to this event, the Kal Rats also puts on a Sprint Triathlon slated to take place June 23 this year, the 30th anniversary!
