Penticton won't be hosting the Vancouver Canucks' Young Stars Classic for at least the next two years.
After close to 15 years of coming to the Peach City, the NHL club announced Tuesday that it is teaming up with the Seattle Kraken to bring a new showcase event south of the border in September 2025.
Top prospects from Vancouver and Seattle will then head to Abbotsford for the two-team event in 2026.
鈥淭he Vancouver Canucks organization would like to sincerely thank the city of Penticton for the incredible job of supporting and hosting the Young Stars Tournament,鈥 said Jim Rutherford, the Canucks' president of hockey operations. 鈥淭he staff at the Okanagan Events Centre, the fans who attended the games, and the local hockey community all contributed to the great success of these events."
Starting in 2010, the Canucks brought the pre-season tournament to Penticton for nine consecutive years. After taking a year off in 2019, the Young Stars Classic was cancelled in both 2020 and 2021 amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
In September 2022, the event returned with prospects from the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets and Canucks.
"Unfortunately, we were unable to secure commitments from the other teams for next fall, so regrettably, we will not be hosting a Penticton Young Stars Tournament in 2025," Rutherford said, adding that the Canucks haven't ruled out bringing the tournament back to the South Okanagan community in future years.
"The organization will explore other opportunities with the city," he said.
