Provincial funding towards food banks across the province saw $33,000 go towards North Okanagan based organizations, including $15,000 for Vernon鈥檚 Salvation Army.
鈥淔amilies are feeling the pinch from global inflation and other economic pressures, which puts even more strain on food banks,鈥� said Harwinder Sandhu, MLA for Vernon-Monashee. 鈥淚n recognition of this rising demand, our government has increased funding for the Vernon Salvation Army, which will help this essential organization meet the needs of people in the community.鈥�
In addition to the Salvation Army, three other North Okanagan organizations received funds:
Armstrong Food Bank- Boys and Girls Club of the Okanagan ($6,000)
Cherryville Community Food Bank Society ($6,000)
Lumby Food Bank Society ($6,000)
In August, $15 million was shelled out to Food Banks across the province, which was a part of a larger $200 million announced in the spring for work to strengthen the food supply, increase availability of fresh food, encourage food production in remote area, strengthen food infrastructure and more regional food hubs.
鈥淲e all want people to have the support and services they need to get healthy, nutritious food. Global inflation has hit people hard, and the rising cost of food is especially challenging,鈥� said Sheila Malcolmson, minister of social development and poverty reduction. 鈥淥ur new $15 million funding will help food banks meet rising demand and fund rapid access to food in emergencies like wildfire.鈥�
