Vernon鈥檚 Okanagan College (OC) will be hosting an Open House for prospective students, along with a fundraiser for their new childcare centre.

The Open House will take place between 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kal View Cafe on Thursday, Oct. 19.

Additionally, spotlight sessions will be held around the campus. They include: Arts (room D221), Business (room D223), Health (room D233), Science (room D310 and D327), Writing and Publishing (D100) and Early Childhood Education (room E102).

You can also enter to win a $500 tuition voucher at the event.

A new student housing and childcare centre is on target to open in 2024 on the campus, and an effort to garner funds, OC will be hosting a fundraiser called Glow Up.

The matinee, masquerade and lantern light up is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 28. Participants can make their own lanterns at an upcoming workshop hosted by local artists at OC on Saturday, Oct. 21 between 10 a.m to 2 p.m.

For the main event, families and friends are encouraged to wear a costume for the movie, Trolls. After the film, participants will light up their lanterns and join a parade led by a stilt walker and drummers through the downtown core of Vernon.

The parade will end at the Vernon Museum where participants can enjoy free entertainment, refreshments and a silent auction. All proceeds will go towards the Sunflower Childcare Campaign.

鈥淕low Up promises to be a unique celebration of fun and fantasy,鈥 said Shannon Marsh, a volunteer on the organizing committee. 鈥淭his event is about celebrating community. This is an opportunity for families and people of all ages to come together while supporting new childcare spaces in Vernon.鈥

She says if people are unable to attend the lantern-making workshop, they can still join in the main festivities.

Local businesses have also generously donated silent auction items, from local art and jewelry to gift certificates for family activities and restaurants.

Okanagan College Foundation Development Officer Sasha Carter is excited to host Glow UP, which will make a meaningful impact on a critical need in the community.

鈥淭he statistics speak for themselves; 50 per cent of parents are currently waitlisted for childcare services and those have an average wait time of two years,鈥 said Carter.

She adds that for student parents, the drive to pursue post-secondary is complicated and daunting enough without having the complexity of finding childcare.

鈥淪tudents who have access to affordable and safe childcare are three times more likely to graduate. This is a win for our student parents and a win for our community.鈥
