The members of the Young Leaders鈥 Program in Keremeos are being recognized by the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen for their volunteer work.

Students of Grades 7 to 9 from Similkameen Elementary Secondary School met monthly at the Similkameen Recreation Centre under the guidance of RDOS recreation programmer Carole Fitsell.

The young leaders are being recognized for their community involvement and leadership qualities. The program provides students a place to learn important skills such as First Aid and Food Safe, organize community events, and have fun. This year, the group planned events for Easter, Halloween, and summer programs.

When asked why they wanted to be part of the program, all agreed that it is a wonderful opportunity to be part of the community and to give back.

鈥淰olunteering is a great experience and helps you learn many valuable life lessons and skills,鈥 said Javraj, one of the young leaders.

Another leader Matthew said, 鈥淚f young people were thinking of volunteering, make sure you鈥檙e very organized.鈥

鈥淛ust do your best and be nice to everyone,鈥 said a third young leader, Caitlin.

Leadership opportunities allow youth to thrive in a positive environment that promotes personal growth and development. As more young people get involved as future leaders, they too will help the RDOS strive towards its goal of Healthy Individuals and Communities.

鈥淚 am grateful for the time and effort committed by Carole and the participants who make the Young Leaders鈥 Program possible,鈥 said Jason Wiebe, RDOS municipal director and Keremeos Mayor. 鈥淭his fantastic program teaches students lifelong skills, promotes volunteerism, and builds a strong sense of community among our youth. Well done everyone, and thank you.鈥
