A unique twist on the popular musical, Grease, is coming to a Vernon stage.
Bear Grease is a fresh and fun take on the classic 1978 musical. The all-Indigenous cast includes Crystle Lightning, a 2021 Canadian Screen Award winner for best actress and MC Redcloud.
It takes the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre (VDPAC) stage Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m.
Expect familiar characters like Rizzo and Frenchie in this well-known story of high school love, except the pink ladies are pink aunties and the famous melodies stay true to their 鈥�50s鈥� roots, but with a hip-hop boost.
Lightning, from the Enoch Cree Nation, won the award for her role as Maggie in CBC鈥檚 Trickster. Her TV appearances include hit series Days of Our Lives, Yellowstone and Outlander.
RedCloud of the Huichol/Wixaritari is an actor and recording artist who once held the world record for longest freestyle rap. Together, they form the hip-hop duo LightningCloud and have shared the stage with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj and Chris Brown. The two co-wrote Bear Grease to celebrate their Indigenous identities in a way that would be accessible to everyone.
鈥淏ear Grease was the first show to sell out at the Edmonton Fringe Festival in 2021 and it looks like it will be just as popular here in Vernon,鈥� said VDPAC artistic director Erin Kennedy.
