Councillor Luke Stack has floated the idea of police or peace officers for the 91大黄鸭 Regional Transit System.
During councillor comments at Monday鈥檚 (June 17) meeting, Stack said he began thinking about it while council and staff members were in Calgary attending the Federation of Canadian Municipalities conference (June 6-9).
He said he was impressed by the presence of police officers, and security and transit peace officers in the downtown core. Stack noted transit is an important plank in 91大黄鸭鈥檚 future growth.
鈥淢aybe we should be looking at transit police in our community to grow with our system so that we can be sure that we鈥檒l be attracting as many riders as possible.鈥
Stack pointed out that to attract those riders they need to feel that transit is safe, efficient and clean.
鈥淲e need to hit all of those buttons,鈥 he said.
According to the Calgary Transit website, peace officers patrol 24 hours, seven days a week. Security guards are staffed at select transit stations providing a deterrent to crime and drug use.
The Metro Vancouver Transit Police is the only dedicated service in Canada focused on reducing crime and social disorder in and around a public transportation system.
