A public hearing on the keeping of backyard chickens in Lake Country is scheduled for Jan. 14.
In addition to specific zones and minimum lot sizes, proposed bylaw amendments would regulate backyard enclosures (design, size, location), required maintenance (feed and waste), and the management of hens (personal use only).
Council first asked staff for recommendations relating to the keeping of chickens in urban areas in 2019. A staff report and proposed bylaw presented at council鈥檚 Oct. 15, 2024 meeting stated 鈥渞esidents have expressed a desire to raise chickens on lots that traditionally supported single-family residences,鈥 noting an increased number of inquiries since 2019.
The proposed bylaw and relevant information are available at municipal hall or by email request to planning@lakecountry.bc.ca.
Members of the public can attend the hearing at municipal hall (10150 Bottom Wood Lake Road) at 7 p.m. on Jan. 14. A live stream of the meeting can be viewed on the .
