The City of West 91大黄鸭 will need to build 2,266 new housing units over the next five years under provincial housing legislation.
鈥淥ur government is working closely with municipalities to ensure more homes are built in communities with the greatest needs,鈥 Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon said in a media release.
A 2022 housing needs assessment showed that the city would need to build 299 units per year until 2041, a total of 5,380 dwellings, to meet expected demand.
At a meeting in February city council expressed concern about how the housing legislation changes will affect staff workloads.
West 91大黄鸭 is one of 10 communities in the third round of housing targets outlined by the provincial government.
A total of 17,599 homes are expected to be delivered representing a 58 per cent increase in overall housing to be built when compared to historical trends, according to a government release.
The municipalities also have a list of guidelines recommending the number of units by size, rental versus owned units, below-market rental units and units with on-site supports.
Municipalities will be evaluated after six months, then every year, on their progress.
The province鈥檚 Housing Supply Act came into effect in 2023. It allowed the government to establish housing targets based on areas of greatest need and highest projected growth.
