There is significant opposition to a proposed townhouse development on Tallus Ridge in the Shannon Lake neighbourhood.

Council received several responses, including a 60-signature petition, at its July 23 meeting.

The 46-unit, 12-building project is planned for 2419 Mountains Hollow Lane and is Phase 1 of a multi-phase hillside development.

One email chastised the city for wanting to 鈥渄evelop every square inch of land,鈥� and 鈥淲est 91大黄鸭 does not need more housing.鈥�

Several comments suggested an oversaturation of townhomes in the Shannon Lake area. Other emails cited concerns about increased traffic, parking congestion and existing speeding on Mountains Hollow Lane.

鈥淚t poses a severe threat to the safety and security of the community.鈥�

One area resident criticized council for potentially displacing wildlife.

鈥淭his is disgusting,鈥� the email reads. 鈥淵ou are forcing them out of their homes. Shame on you!鈥�

Other comments mentioned what is seen as a lack of infrastructure in the area, additional density, and reduced quality of life for current residents. 

Mayor Gord Milsom pointed out the property had been zoned as low-density residential for several years.

鈥淭hat includes the ability to build townhouses on the land. It鈥檚 not new.鈥�

There were also complaints from residents not being able to walk and enjoy the property once construction starts.

鈥淚 get that,鈥� Councillor Rick de Jong said. 鈥淭he owner of that (private) property has the right to move forward and develop it.鈥�
 
Council unanimously approved a development permit for the project to move forward.
