It might not have been 7 kilometres, but about 100 91大黄鸭 residents did step up for a cause.

The second annual event took place at Mission Creek Park this Sunday in advance of International Woman鈥檚 Day.

Local organizer Wendy Wright says the event is meant to raise awareness and funds in support of gender equality and to help end global poverty.

鈥淏asically this is to bring awareness to the fact that in developing countries, women and more specifically girls have to take 10,000 steps or 6 to 7 km a day just to get basic necessities such as water and firewood,鈥 explained Wright.

This year鈥檚 event raised about $6000 for CARE鈥 an international humanitarian agency delivering emergency relief and long-term international development projects.

International Women鈥檚 Day is Wednesday March 8, which is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

The day has been observed since in the early 1900鈥檚 an is a a collective day to call for gender parity.

This Wednesday Okanagan College Student Union will host an on campus event in 91大黄鸭 in front of the library at 11 a.m.

There will also be a movie screening of the film, The Hunting Ground, which focuses on sexual assault on college campuses, at 6 p.m. in room E103.
