BC Ferries announces new onboard eating option – for a fee

Seascapes Lounge replaces Pacific Buffet space on Spirit class vessels that work Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay route

Starting this summer, BC Ferries passengers can pay for a next-level eating experience as the Pacific Buffet replacement takes root.

Seascapes, the on-board lounge, is poised to feature a selection of food and beverage options in a quiet, more relaxed setting – for a price.

“Customers have been clear in their feedback – they want a space that is special and distinct from the other dining areas, offering a quiet and comfortable setting,” said Melanie Lucia, vice-president of customer experience. “Seascapes Lounge is designed to meet those expectations, offering an elevated dining experience with a curated selection of food and beverage options, while also reducing congestion in the Coastal Cafe.”

BC Ferries launched a survey in spring 2023 on what to do with the former Pacific Buffet space – originally suspended in March 2020 due to health safety regulations. Prior to that, the buffet required seven staff members per sailing, or more than 80 crew in total, and lost approximately $1.2 million, BC Ferries said in a news release at the time.

Seascapes is set to fill that space on board the two Spirit-class vessels. The paid-access dining lounge will offer breakfast, lunch and dinner, for an entry fee of $6 including tax.

The entry fee includes unlimited coffee, tea and fountain beverages. Food, local beer, wine and non-alcoholic craft beverages will be available for purchase.

More than 10,000 people participated in surveys to share what they wanted from the space, expressing strong support for premium food options and a quieter atmosphere. BC Ferries is delivering on this feedback while also exploring innovative ways to maintain its role as an essential public service.

“As operational costs continue to rise, we need to find new ways to meet customer expectations while ensuring financial stability. Seascapes Lounge allows us to do both – delivering a better experience for passengers while supporting our ability to invest in the future,” Lucia said.

The lounge is expected to open in time for summer travel.
