Some compassionate dog control officers have reunited a family.

Jasmine the dog is back with Dawn Dixon and her family in Carvel, Alta. (not far from Stony Plain outside of Edmonton) after being found in Vernon.

鈥淲e just wanted to send you a thank you for returning Jasmine to us,鈥� said Dixon in a letter to dog control and the Regional District of North Okanagan. 鈥淲e had given up hope that we would find her after she managed to get out of the yard in early December.鈥�

In late March, Jasmine, a 10-year-old border collie, was found wandering Vernon without a license.

鈥淒og control checked her for identification, found a microchip and contacted the registered owner in Alberta. The owner, however, was out of the country and unable to retrieve voice mail until several days later,鈥� said Leah Mellott, with RDNO.

鈥淛asmine had already been in the pound for five days when an individual showed up to claim ownership, stating that a friend had found the dog in Alberta.鈥�

According to Mellott, dog control officers refused to release Jasmine as they suspected these individuals were not the rightful owners.

Shortly after that, contact was made with Dixon.

鈥淵ou can鈥檛 imagine our surprise and shock to get a call that she was found, and that she was almost 800 kilometres away,鈥� said Dixon in her letter.

鈥淚f you and your team hadn鈥檛 scanned her chip, she may never have made it home. She is home now and everyone is happy to have her back.鈥�

North Okanagan residents are encouraged to lend a hand when they see a lost dog.
