UBC Okanagan has its sights set on some big plans to mitigate parking issues in the downtown core when its new campus opens.
An underground parkade is set for construction, and at four storeys deep, it will be the deepest parking garage in the Central Okanagan.
In terms of design, the parkade will be built in a 鈥榯anked鈥 form, meaning crews will use a special waterproof concrete mix to accommodate the city鈥檚 high water table.
Typically in building an underground parkade, water around the foundation is pumped away, though in a tanked design, the water and soil is kept in place to ensure structural balance.
鈥淯BCO鈥檚 downtown expansion is about far more than just physical growth. It鈥檚 about integrating our institution鈥檚 commitment to research, innovation and education into the heart of 91大黄鸭鈥檚 urban landscape,鈥 said Dr. Lesley Cormack, principal and deputy vice-chancellor of the UBCO campus. 鈥淭his tanked parking garage is a prime example of our innovative approach, demonstrating how we are rising to meet the unique challenges our city presents.鈥
Thew new campus building, which is set to be the highest in 91大黄鸭 at 43 storeys, will be located at 550 Doyle Avenue. It will host student housing, store fronts, and a coffee shop.
It is expected to be open by 2027.
