Nearly 100 adult hockey players got to strut their stuff in Vernon over the weekend, as the annual Verncaygeon tournament wrapped up.
The three-day event (April 4-6) was an effort to showcase adult hockey in the area, as a wrap-up to the season.
"Every parent takes their kids to games but when the season is done, I felt like there was a bit of a hole in our community," said tournament director Josh Welter. "This tournament was able to showcase the adults competing, and having the kids in the crowd for once cheering on their parents was a lot of fun."
Now in its third year, Verncaygeon featured a record 20 teams, with 14 from outside the Okanagan.
Teams competed in four divisions: Women's A, B and Men's A and B.
The Ice Angels from Vernon won the women's A division, with the Specialty Surfaces Vernon Vixens coming second.
The Vixens, who have been playing together for over 20 years, competed in the newly established North Okanagan Women's Hockey League based out of Armstrong this season. The Vixens called the Verncaygeon event a "fantastic way to wrap up the season."
The Phoenix Women Hockey Club from Calgary won the B division.
On the men's side, Friday Night Lights from Vernon took home the win in the A division, while the Armstrong/Vernon team Backyard Dealers won the B division.
The tournament also hosted a banquet down at Silverstar Brewing which Welter called a success.
"The tournament was also held at all three rinks in Vernon as the city's commitment to providing a high level of service for sporting events held in our community was on great display this weekend," Welter explained. The local staff were overwhelmingly accommodating to the organizers, and the athletes participating and next year's event is already being planned."
