Dozens of snowboarders showed off their skills on Jan. 18

Out of a field of 25 riders, it was up to returning inaugural champion Geremy Guido to defend his title at Penticton's Rail Jam.

The competition, part of the annual Frost Fest winter carnival, saw the boarders climb up two stories worth of stacked shipping containers to show their best tricks on a slope in the middle of downtown Penticton.

This year, the competition was more formal, with riders put into brackets and going head-to-head following an initial qualifier round to narrow the field to a Top 16.

It was Kamloops' Guido and 91大黄鸭's Lee Coulthard who made it to the final round.

"It's a really fun event. The set up here is insane, and the rails this year were a lot better, so it made it a lot easier to get in the groove," said Guido.

The goofy-footed boarder, which means right foot forward, was one of the most consistent of the night, only slipping off the rail without a trick twice.

"You only have so many hits in a jam like this, so the more you're landing the better your score is gonna be, and then the more tricks you can try so you're not repeating," said Guido.

For the women's side of the event, it was a head-to-head match up from the get-go between returning boarders Jessie Brewster and Laura Lucas.

Brewster ended up winning over the judges and taking the top prizes of cash and a new board.

In addition to the snowboarders, two world-class freestyle skiiers showed off their own skills.

Six-time NorAm silver medallist Naomi Urness and hometown boy Alec Henderson both took to the slope for a showcase in front of the crowds.

Even though temperatures were well below freezing, there was barely a breeze to disturb the hundreds of people gathered to watch the competition.
