The winner of the Vernon Vipers' 2024-25 Blueliners Award has no reason to feel blue about his future.
Forward Ryan Watt has committed to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, in the Canadian U-Sports Hockey League, for 2025-26.
Watt came to Vernon at the B.C. Hockey League trade deadline Feb. 10, along with forward Finn Kallay, from the Victoria Grizzlies. Will Schumacher went to the provincial capital.
A veteran of four BCHL seasons, Watt wrapped up his junior hockey career in impressive fashion with the Vipers. The North Vancouver native brought energy, skill, and leadership every time he hit the ice, and his impact was felt both on and off the scoresheet.
He was named winner of the team's year Blueliners Academic Award, which carries with it a $1,750 scholarship.
Watt suited up in 171 games in his junior career, scoring 30 goals and adding 36 assists.
"His dedication and perseverance over four seasons are a testament to his work ethic and love for the game," said the Vipers.
The Varsity Blues are members of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) conference.
Emma Elders and Scarlett Jones, both from Coldstream, are members of the U of T Women's Varsity Blues, who won the bronze medal at the U-Sports National Women's Finals in Elmira, Ont. in March.
